t’s only a week but it felt like years

I can tell you everything without any fears

I laugh at you to show I care

We aren’t exact pairs but we make it work

There’s no doubt I won’t change each of your worth

I won’t cry, my people can’t make me cry

But I laugh a loud laugh, my stomach hurts

They hold the freedom I need

The attention I crave

Am I smiling? It’s because I’m with them

Our conversations replicate nonsense

The language we speak is laughter

My idiotic nature is accepted here

The raging anxiety and insecurity disappear

When I’m with them the introvert becomes an extrovert

You gave me a quarter when I wanted to buy chips

You gave me rides home so I wouldn’t be alone

You brought me noodles so I can eat lunch

You let me have your pepper spray when I told you I needed to buy one

How was I lucky enough to have friends like you

This world is full of darkness

From the hate and deceit

But with my people they bring the light

The bring the goodness we need and the trust we crave

And now I know when they’re around everything will be okay.

Here is the slam poem I had to write and perform for my AP Lit class, this isn't about anyone I know but I thought the idea was interesting.
